New words

wigwam- a hut or tent with a domed or conical roof made by fastening bark, hides, or reed mats over a framework of poles

Sentence: A boy looked out of a toy wigwam and fired an arrow with a rubber end at the car.

beavers- a large semiaquatic broad-tailed rodent native to North America and northern Eurasia.

Sentence: On the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, the pine forested land is home to beavers and wolves.

acorns- the small nut of the oak tree, that grows in a base shaped like a cup

Sentence: From small acorns great oaks grow.

reindeer- a type of large brownish wild animal that eats grass and lives in Arctic regions

Sentence: Reindeer roam the tundra in large herds.

timid- easily frightened; shy and nervous

Sentence: She's very timid and shy when meeting strangers.



Reading is Fun

1. Who was Hiawatha?

Ans. Hiawatha was a young Red Indian boy.

2. Who was Nokomis?

Ans. Nokomis was Hiawatha’s grandmother.

3. What did he learn about birds?

Ans. He learned the languages of the birds, their names and all their secrets like how they build their nests and where they hide in winters.

4. What secrets did he learn about beasts?

Ans. He learnt how the beavers build their lodges, where the squirrels hide their food, how the reindeer run so swiftly and why the rabbit is so timid.

Let’s Listen

1. Whisper a secret in your partner’s ear. The partner will, in turn, whisper his secret in your ear.


Now talk about the secret aloud.

2. Form a circle and whisper a secret into the ear of the person on your right. He, in turn, whispers into the ear of the person on the right. Pass the secret on till it goes around the circle. The last person will tell the secret aloud.

He said, “I’ll give my money to the strongest of you.” On hearing this, the thieves started fighting amongst themselves. Ram slipped away quietly.


(B) Sitting on a tree a crow was enjoying a piece of bread. A hungry fox wanted to have that bread. He said very sweetly, “Dear brother, I’ve heard that your voice is very sweet. Please sing a song for me.” The foolish crow opened his beak and the piece of bread fell down. The fox picked it up in his mouth and ran away.
