NCERT Solutions Class 4 English Unit 9 The Naughty Boy

Poem "The Naughty Boy"

There was a naughty boy,
And a naughty boy was he.
He ran away to Scotland,
The people there to see –
Then he found
That the ground
Was as hard,
That a yard
Was as long,
That a song
Was as merry,
That a cherry
Was as red,
That lead
Was as weighty,
That fourscore
Was as eighty,
That a door was as wooden
As in England—
So he stood in his shoes
And he wondered,
He wondered,
He stood in his shoes,
And he wondered.
– John Keats

Summary of the Poem The Naughty Boy by John Keats

John Keats' poem "The Naughty Boy" tells the lighthearted story of a mischievous youngster who, out of curiosity, decides to flee to Scotland. He travels there to observe the locals. He is shocked to discover, though, that a lot of things are very similar to what he was used to in England. A yard is the same length, the ground is just as hard, the cherries are still red, and the songs are just as joyful. He also observes that, similar to England, doors are made of wood, lead is as heavy, and "fourscore" still means eighty. The boy stands in his shoes at the poem's conclusion, reflecting on these parallels and possibly coming to the realization that the world isn't as different as he had thought.
